Lake of Egypt — Southern Illinois' Premier Recreation Lake

Lake of Egypt is not a town. It is a destination — one of the finest freshwater recreation lakes in the Midwest, and the crown jewel of the Southern Illinois outdoor experience. Spanning 2,300 acres with 90 miles of shoreline, the lake was created in 1962 by the Southern Illinois Power Cooperative by damming the South Fork of the Saline River, and it carries the "Little Egypt" nickname that Southern Illinois has worn for generations. What was built for utility has become one of the region's defining assets — a full-recreation lake where boaters, anglers, water skiers, swimmers, and lakefront property owners have been building memories for over 60 years.

The lake straddles both Johnson County and Williamson County, six miles south of Marion, and is surrounded by the Shawnee National Forest on multiple sides. Unlike many restricted Illinois lakes, Lake of Egypt allows all size boat motors, water skiing in the designated ski area, and jet skis until dusk — making it one of the few genuinely unrestricted recreation lakes in the state. The lake has an average depth of 18 feet and a maximum depth of 52 feet.

Boating, Fishing & Water Sports

Lake of Egypt is built for boating. No horsepower restrictions, a 35 mph speed limit on the water, a designated ski area for water skiing and wake sports, and jet skis allowed until dusk. The lake accommodates pontoon boats up to 28 feet and hull boats up to 20 feet, with three public boat launches operated by the marinas above.

On summer weekends the lake hums with activity from dawn to dusk — ski boats carving wakes through the main channel, pontoons drifting through quiet wooded coves, anglers anchored over crappie beds in the shallows, kayakers exploring the miles of wooded bays where the lake narrows into ribbons of calm water. Then the sun goes down and everyone ends up at one of the marinas for live music and cold drinks. This is what lake life looks like in Southern Illinois.

FISHING: The lake supports strong populations of largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, striped bass (exceeding 20 lbs have been documented), crappie (outstanding — locals rate the crappie fishing among the best in Southern Illinois), channel catfish, and bluegill. Spring and fall are peak seasons when fish move shallow. Summer night fishing for catfish from the bank or anchored boats is a local tradition. An Illinois fishing license is required for residents and non-residents age 16 and up.

WATER SPORTS: Water skiing is permitted in the lake's designated ski area. Tubing, wakeboarding, wake surfing, and jet skiing are all popular. The KOA on-site vendor rents pontoons and jet skis by the hour or day. Pyramid Acres and Mack's both offer pontoon rentals. During summer, the KOA water park's floating obstacle course is open to the public — a full afternoon of entertainment for families.

School Districts at Lake of Egypt

Because the lake spans both Johnson County and Williamson County, buyers at Lake of Egypt will fall into one of three school districts depending on where their specific property is located.

Important Note for Buyers

School district assignment at Lake of Egypt depends on the exact parcel location — a property on one street may be in a different district than the property next door. Marion CUSD 2 is a top-third Illinois school district, and Goreville CUD 1 has been recognized by ISBE as a top 10% Illinois school. Both are strong options. Your SIRE broker can confirm the school district for any specific property before you make an offer.

Shawnee National Forest — At Your Doorstep

The Marion/Shawnee National Forest KOA campground sits within the forest boundary, and the entire Lake of Egypt is surrounded by or immediately adjacent to the Shawnee National Forest263,000 acres of oak-hickory forest, sandstone bluffs, deep canyons, and wetlands stretching between the Ohio and Mississippi rivers. It is one of the most ecologically diverse regions east of the Rockies, and it is minutes from the lake in every direction.

Day trips from Lake of Egypt include: Ferne Clyffe State Park (1 mile south of Goreville, 2,430 acres, 18 hiking trails, 100-ft waterfall, Hawk's Cave 150-ft shelter bluff), Giant City State Park (famous sandstone bluffs, rock climbing, horseback riding, legendary fried chicken at the Lodge), Garden of the Gods (the most photographed spot in Southern Illinois — ancient sandstone formations with sweeping views), Little Grand Canyon (a box canyon formed over 5,000 years, one of the most dramatic hikes in the Midwest), Draper's Bluff (the premier rock climbing destination in Southern Illinois), and the Tunnel Hill State Trail (a 45-mile rail-to-trail through tunnels and high trestles connecting Harrisburg to Karnak).

Hunting in the Shawnee National Forest is available for deer, turkey, dove, quail, squirrel, and waterfowl throughout their respective seasons. The Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge — one of the best waterfowl hunting destinations in Illinois with Canada Geese peaking at 200,000 birds — is a short drive north.

Shawnee Hills Wine Trail — 11 Wineries, 40 Miles, One Afternoon

One of the most underrated wine destinations in the Midwest sits right out the back door of Lake of Egypt. The Shawnee Hills Wine Trail features 11 award-winning wineries along a 40-mile scenic drive through the rolling hills of the Shawnee National Forest on Highway 127 and Highway 51. Established in 1995, it was the first wine trail in Illinois and the first region in Illinois to receive the American Viticultural Area designation — a recognition of the area's unique growing conditions that produce wines unlike anything made anywhere else in the Midwest.

The trail is especially known for Chambourcin and Rosé wines that thrive in Southern Illinois' climate. From intimate family-run tasting rooms to full-service venues with food, lodging, and live music, every winery on the trail has its own personality and its own reason to stop.

The trail is an easy drive from Lake of Egypt — wineries cluster close enough that four to six can be visited comfortably in a single afternoon. From St. Louis the drive is about two hours, from Chicago roughly five and a half. Several wineries offer lodging — suites, B&Bs, and cabin rentals — making the wine trail a natural weekend extension of a Lake of Egypt trip.

Living on the Lake — Real Estate Opportunities

Lake of Egypt real estate is among the most compelling in Southern Illinois — offering a genuine waterfront lifestyle at prices that would be unthinkable on comparable lakes in other Midwest markets.

The market ranges widely by location and water access. Established waterfront homes with private boat docks and deep-water frontage typically list from $250,000 into the $600,000s and above for premier properties. Recent lakefront builds — many constructed since 2015 — feature open-concept floor plans, covered boat docks with lifts, stone patios, outdoor kitchens, and panoramic water views. Off-water lots in lake community subdivisions with access to shared boat ramps, clubhouses, and pools are available from the $30,000s.

New development continues at Lake of Egypt. Egypt Isle on the Peninsula is the lake's newest subdivision, with deep-water waterfront lots and high-speed fiber optic internet available at the road. Multiple established subdivisions offer covenant-protected lake communities with annual association fees that provide access to private boat launches, beaches, and community amenities.

The Goreville school district is frequently cited by buyers specifically seeking properties on the Johnson County side — the 10:1 student-teacher ratio and ISBE top 10% recognition make it a genuine draw for families with school-age children. Buyers on the Williamson County side feed into Marion CUSD 2 and ultimately Marion High School — also a strong top-third Illinois district.
